Evidence for Thermal Absorption inside Cassiopeia A

چکیده
Subarcminute resolution images of Cas A at 74 and 333 MHz are presented. Comparison with each other and with higher frequency observations indicates that the spectral index of its nonthermal emission flattens below 333 MHz and that the effect is confined toward the central 19 of the source and is maximum at its center. The source of the flattening is unknown, although we show that the data are consistent with absorption by ionized gas inside the radio shell. Such a component may be related to unshocked ejecta still freely expanding within the boundaries of the reverse shock as delineated by X-ray observations. ASTROPHYSICS 86 and 140 GHz radiocontinuum maps of the Cassiopeia A SNR
MM-wave continuum emission from the Cassiopeia A SNR was mapped at 86 and 140 GHz using an on-the-fly beam-switching technique at NRAO’s 12m telescope on Kitt Peak. Global nebular mm-wave fluxes follow quite well the Sν ∝ ν−0.77 behaviour established previously at frequencies of 1-23 GHz and vary as Sν ∝ ν−0.763±0.008 over the entire range 1-140 GHz. The 86 GHz excess found earlier by Kenney & ...
متن کاملEffect of Heat Recirculation in Biomass Flame Stability within a Cylindrical Micro-Combustor (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Flame stability inside a cylindrical micro-combustor was studied. Considering occurrence of heat recirculation, the respective relations were written and with parameters such as motion speed of reactants, flame propagation speed and thermal conductivity of the combustor’s wall, flame stability and its location inside micro-combustor were studied. It was found that for each thermal conductivity ...
متن کاملCooling rates of neutron stars and the young neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant
We explore the thermal state of the neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using the recent result of Ho & Heinke that the thermal radiation of this star is well described by a carbon atmosphere model and the emission comes from the entire stellar surface. Starting from neutron star cooling theory, we formulate a robust method to extract neutrino cooling rates of thermally relaxed s...
متن کاملImpacts of Detection of a Point Source in Cassiopeia A
Very recently a point-like source was detected near the center of Cassiopeia A supernova remnant by the Chandra first light observation and subsequently confirmed by a long ROSAT observation. We argue that this detection can potentially provide enormous impacts on the theories of supernova explosion, progenitor scenario, compact remnant formation, accretion to compact objects, and neutron star ...
متن کاملMeasurement of a low-absorption sample of OH-reduced fused silica.
Low-absorption optics made of OH-reduced fused silica are a key technology for future gravitational wave detectors such as the Advanced LIGO. We developed a sensitive method to measure the absorption inside the beam splitter of the GEO 600, taking advantage of the effect of thermal lensing. Using this method, we derived a bulk absorption of less than 0.25 ppm/cm for a piece of Suprasil 311 SV a...
